ListenRank is a tool for ranking music. We collect as little as we can to run it, and we don't sell your data, run ad networks, or use third-party tracking. This page explains what we keep and the control you have over it.

What we collect

  • Your rankings and votes. When you finish a ranking we save the result, and in matchup mode we save the individual "I prefer A over B" choices. These power the community charts and are always shown in aggregate, never as your individual list.
  • An anonymous token. If you use ListenRank without an account, we store a random token in a first-party cookie so your rankings can be saved and, if you sign up later, moved to your account. It carries no name and is never used for cross-site tracking or advertising. Clearing your cookies resets it.
  • Account details. If you create an account, we store your email, your chosen username, and a securely hashed password. This is your core personal information, and we keep it walled off from everything else.
  • Sign-in records. For your security, we keep a short history of sign-ins to your account (time and device). It's deleted when you delete your account.
  • Aggregate analytics. Privacy-friendly, cookieless usage stats (which features get used) with no personal data attached.

The two vote pools

Rankings from signed-in accounts and from anonymous visitors are counted separately. Community charts show the signed-in pool by default, with an option to view everything. You can turn off inclusion of your rankings entirely from your account settings.

Where catalog data comes from

Artist, album, and song data comes from MusicBrainz and cover art from the Cover Art Archive. When you search and we don't already have a result cached, your search terms are sent to those services. We cache results so this happens as rarely as possible.

Who processes data for us

A small set of vetted providers run the service on our behalf, each under a data-processing agreement: our cloud host and database (AWS and Neon), email delivery (Amazon SES), privacy-friendly usage analytics (Cloudflare Web Analytics), and error monitoring (Sentry, configured to scrub personal data). None of them are advertising or data-broker services.

Your rights

  • Access & export. You can see and download your account data and saved rankings.
  • Deletion. Deleting your account scrubs your email, username, and password for good. Your past contributions remain in the community charts anonymously, so historical rankings aren't corrupted; you can request a full removal of those too.
  • Opt out. Turn off community-chart inclusion any time from your account.
